The rediscovery of Bhāsa’s plays in the first decades of the 20th century is the most remarkable event in the history of Indian classical theatre. Since then all thirteen plays of Bhāsa, some based on the Mahābhārata, others on the Rāmāyana and Bruhadakathā have been widely performed across the country and abroad. Modern attempts at staging Bhāsa’s plays for contemporary audience in different styles include following:
Over and above these modern attempts, Bhāsa plays are also performed on the Kutiyattam stage especially his Rāmāyana plays.
With a view to providing a first hand exposure of the performances of Bhāsa’s plays both in the Nātyashāstric and regional traditional theatre forms and to discovering their contemporary relevance, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla is organizing a school on ‘Bhāsa in Performance’ from 29 August 2016 to 11th September 2016.
Applications are invited from young theatre practitioners conversant with Bhāsa plays and also PG students/young teachers from theatre departments of various universities having inclination for Sanskrit play production.
A batch of 25 participants will be selected from amongst the applicants. Those interested may send their bio-data (that should include their academic qualification and experience) along with the note of 200-250 words.
All expenses will be borne by the IIAS. Applications may be sent by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org which must reach IIAS by 30 June 2016. Those selected will be informed by 20 July 2016. The decision of the Institute in selection of candidates to attend the School would be final and no correspondence in this regard would be entertained.
