Professor Chetan Singh

Professor Chetan Singh is a historian and has taught at Panjab University, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He is an alumnus of Lawrence School, Sanawar and St. Stephen's College, Delhi University and completed his Ph. D at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Professor Singh was a Fellow of the IIAS from 1993 to 1995, and was the editor the of the Institute's journal Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (1995-99).

He specialized in Medieval Indian History but later developed an interest in environmental and cultural history. Among the books he has authored are: Region and Empire: Punjab in the Seventeenth Century, and Natural Premises: Ecology and Peasant Life in Western Himalaya 1800-1950 (both published by OUP). He has also edited, Recognising Diversity: Society and Culture in the Himalayas (OUP) and Social Transformation in the North Western India during the 20th Century (Manohar), besides contributing numerous articles and research papers in leading international and national journals. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, Paris. He was nominated as the President of the Medieval History Section at the Panjab History Congress, Patiala in March 2002.

Professor Singh has remained actively associated with academic and administrative bodies of Himachal Pradesh University, various State and Central Universities and also of the IIAS. He was a member of the Administrative and Financial Reforms Committee which was set-up by the Governing Body of IIAS to suggest measures for administrative, financial and academic reforms and changes. He has also been a member of the Society, Governing Body, Finance Committee, Academic Committee and Fellowship Award Committee of the IIAS. Professor Singh was the Chancellor's Nominee for the appointment of Professors and Associate Professors in the University of Jammu. At present he is the Visitor's Nominee in Central University, Jammu; Chancellor's Nominee in Kashmir University, Srinagar; and member of the First Court of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala (2012 onwards).
