| About:Research Scholar, Choreographer, Academician With Master's Degree in Literature and later in Bharatanatyam, Dr. Uma Anantani has been awarded Ph.D. in Indian Aesthetics from NalandaNrityakalaMahaVidyalaya, Mumbai University in 2004, under the guidance of Padmabhushan Late Dr. Kanak Rele. Uma has been awarded the Senior National Fellowship in 1998 to conduct research on the ‘Aṣṭanāyikā -s in the Bhakti Songs of Narasinha Mehta’. Dr. Anantani is the Founder Principal of JG College of Performing Arts, Ahmedabad (2004), the first of its kind affiliated to Gujarat University and has continued to remain as visiting scholar to the institution. She is the Founder Director of Rasadhwani Trust since 1990, an institution of classical dance (Bharatnatyam) in Ahmedabad, promoting dance activities by teaching, organizing seminars and workshops. The institution has collaborated with eminent personalities from the field of dance. Earlier, Uma has taught dance in Gandhinagar, Mumbai, and Chicago; some of her students have been awarded National Scholarships. Rasadhwani is a recognised dance institution under the ICCR, New Delhi and Gujarat State SangeetNatakAkademi. Under Rasadhwani, Uma has produced and choreographed several unique research-oriented, multi lingual productions based on interpreting / reinterpreting Indian classical literature. In the recent years, two of her productions ‘Panchali- from Fire to Fire’ and ‘Gandhi Gita’ have been recognised by Ministry of Culture, Government of India for financial assistance. Along with reviews and articles in known newspapers and magazines, Dr. Anantani has also published several papers and has participated in state- and national-level seminars. Uma has two books to her credit, ‘Classical Art – A Tradition from Bharat to Hemchandra,’ (Gujarati) and ‘Tridhara – A Confluence of Dance, Beauty and Spirit’ (English) published by Gujarat State SahityaAkademi and Gujarat State University GranthNirman Board respectively. Recipient of ‘Gaurav Purasaka’, Government of Gujarat, Dr. Anantani has extended her services as an Expert Member on the Board of Studies of Department of Dance in MS University and NNMV, Mumbai University. Dr. Uma is also guiding Ph.D. students of Gujarat University. |
