About: Dr. Jasdeep Kaur Chandi is a fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, at present. She is a science graduate, holding a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics from Gargi College (University of Delhi), where she received a ‘Certificate of Merit’ from the college’s Physics society, 'Quasar.' Her keen interest in creative writing and designing took her to the University School of Mass Communication, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (Govt. of NCT of Delhi), where she pursued a master's in mass communication with a specialization in corporate communication and advertising. She further secured a certification in Print and Publishing from Arena Animation, Delhi. Thereon, her brief stint as an Assistant Editor (Journals Peer Review) at Taylor and Francis Books India Pvt. Ltd. offered her an opportunity to explore the field of academic research and publishing. After teaching as an Assistant Professor at Invertis University (Bareilly) for a year, she went on to pursue doctoral studies from her alma mater, where she was the top scorer at interview earning her the Indraprastha Research Fellowship.Her doctoral research, essentially interdisciplinary in nature, explored the psychosocial and sociocultural aspects of Indian online communities in the context of their subcultures, specifically their content creation, communication, and cultural practices. During her doctoral studies, she published several research papers in Scopus-Indexed journals including East Asian Journal of Popular Culture, IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies, and Journalism & Media. She also contributed a book chapter published in the edited volume Korean Popular Culture in South Asia: Transcultural Flow, Fandom and Identity by Ratan Kumar Roy and Prof. Biswajit Das (published by Springer Palgrave). Moreover, she presented papers at various national and international conferences, including those held by International Communication Association, International Association for Mass Communication Research, Academy of Korean Studies, International Academic Forum, and Southwest Popular/American Culture Association. She was also a recipient of Heldrich Dvorak Travel grant for the SWPACA conference.
At IIAS, diverging from her past work but converging with her interdisciplinary background, Dr. Chandi will be exploring the Gurbani scriptures, specifically Āsa di Vār, in the context of mental and overall well-being. Her current research project stemmed from her continuous engagement with Gurbani since childhood and a keen interest in identifying themes related to psychological well-being embedded in Sikh scriptures.
Besides her academic endeavors, Dr. Chandi likes to paint and is a gouache-enthusiast.
