Reimagining the Futures Past of India: Mnemonics, Heritage and Belonging
The special issue of the journal Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, titled “Reimagining the Futures Past of India: Mnemonics, Heritage and Belonging,” explores the complex relationships among memory, heritage, and belonging in India, examining how the past informs the present and shapes the future. India’s rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions are facing unprecedented challenges in the rapidly changing global landscape. For instance, epic, folk performances, cultural practices, anecdotes from the past, and rituals play a significant role in understanding India’s past knowledge practices. They offer a window into the country’s ancient wisdom, revealing the intricacies of human nature, the universe, and the interconnectedness of all things. These traditions offer time-tested wisdom, providing a more balanced approach to life. Revisiting them provides a foundation for understanding our Indian Knowledge Societies, offers valuable insights into sustainability, inculcates intellectual and spiritual growth, enriches our social systems, strengthens social bonds, prevents cultural erosion, and establishes our cultural identity.
In the light of the above, we invite scholarly contributions from across disciplines to reimagine the futures past of India, focusing on the intersections of mnemonics, heritage, and belonging. We welcome original research articles, review essays, and book reviews that engage with themes such as:
· Cultures of Memory and Nostalgia
· Traditions and Practices in Contemporary India
· Mnemonics of Belonging
· Indian Epic and Knowledge Practices
· Heritage and Social Dimension
· Scriptures and Philosophical Underpinnings
· Indian Medicinal Practices
· Traditional Arts
· Janjatiya Performances
· Rituals, Festivals and Sustainability
· Temple as an Institution
