Prof Sanjai Bhatt

Prof Sanjai Bhatt has received a Master and Doctorate in Social Work and Law degree from University of Lucknow. He has served as Professor of Social Work at the Delhi School of Social Work, the University of Delhi for 30 years. He is social work educator, trainer, and development consultant with his felt presence in the field nearing five decades (49 years). He has also taught in the department of social work at the University of Lucknow, MG Kashi Vidyapeeth Varanasi, Kurukshetra University, and Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya (CGV).

Committed to bridging the gap between social work education and practice, he experiments with different teaching methodologies, engages himself in research in the welfare and development field, and works with grass-root organizations. His areas of interest are social work education, social legislation, social security, occupational social work, Decent work, Drug Dependence, HIV/AIDS, environment, and people’s movement.

Under his supervision, 40 scholars have received their research degree - Ph.D. (25) and MPhil (15) degrees. He has written/edited 11 books, contributed chapters in 25 books, about 80 research papers, six Occasional papers/ monographs, and conducted three dozen+ of research studies for national, international and corporate organizations. He has published a resource Book on Social Work Education in India, and recently edited a book titled LIFE Under LOCKDOWN. He has developed educational video series on different topics. He has led two field action projects- UDAI (University for Development Action and Learning) in Bhuj, Gujarat and Kosi, Bihar.

He has participated/attended/organised a significant number of national and international seminars/ conferences. He has delivered many special lectures including

1st K R Narayan Memorial Lecture at Bundelkhand University; 30th Tara Ali Baig Memorial Lecture organized by SOS villages of India; 4th Special lecture on CSR in the Indian context in National CSR convention at Delhi; 1st National Expert Lecture series at V V Giri National Labour Institute and many more. His thesis 4 W’s (Water, Work, Waste and Women) in Development paradigm, and CRASH model are widely accepted in the academic fraternity. He has enriched the academic life of higher education. He has been a member of various committees appointed by UGC, ICSSR, Planning Commission, Department, and Ministries of Government of India. He worked as a Member/Secretary of PRT appointed by NAAC. He is associated with a number of social movements and civil society organizations in various capacities like Center for Community economics and Development Consultant Society (CECOEDECON), Jaipur; Association of Schools of Social Work in India (ASSWI). He is one of the founder members of Delhi-based advocacy group PAIRVI working for human rights and social justice. He has nurtured the National Association of Professional Workers in India (NAPSWI) since its inception and currently serving its President (since Nov 2024).

Dr. Bhatt has received number of honours and awards- namely- Best Teacher award, Excellence Award for Teachers in Services in Departments, 2023, conferred by University of Delhi; Lifetime Achievement Award, 2022, National Association of Professional Social Workers in India, 2022 at CSRD Ahmednagar conferred during 10th Indian Social Work Congress, 2022; Prof V K R V Rao Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 by Indian Social Science Association, at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He has been associated with number of journals in the field and presently he is serving on International Board of Reviewers and Consultants of Space and Culture; and editor of Journal of Social Work Education, Research and Action; and Social Work Digest.

He has been served many international organizations such as Executive member of International Committee of NGO Forum on ADB based in the Philippines (2004-06); Secretary, South Asia Partnership (SAP India); Immediate Past President, (South Asia) International Council on Social Welfare; Alliance Ambassador to India, Global Social Service Workforce Alliance. He has widely traveled his own country as well as to other
