About:

Professor (Dr.) Om Prakash Sharma was born on 28 August 1962 at Jagrah (/dӡәgra:h/). The village Jagrah situated at Bamta (/bәmta:/) which itself is located in tehsil Chaupal of Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, India. He is an MA, MPhil, and Phd in Sanskrit. Basic Training Certificate in Tankari Script (Aarmbhik Tankari Prashikshan Patra) and Junior Fellowship (in 2000 by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Sanskriti Mantralya (Government of India) are his other qualifications. He has taught for twenty-eight years in various govt. degree colleges of Himachal Pradesh and H.P. University. He remained HOD-Dr. Y.S. Parmar Peeth, H.P. University, Summer Hill, Shimla-5.

  • As a research scholar, he has been researching on the Himalaya, folk knowledges of Himachal and Indian knowledge system for the last thirty five years. He has received many awards for his contribution such as :

His book-Himachal Lipimala (The Paleography of Himachal) is awarded by Cultural Ministry, Govt. of India (Raj Bhasha Prabhag) in 2021.

  • He is the author of 18 books and two are under publication. Professor Om Prakash Sharma has published 8 research papers in books. These books and research papers deal with the culture, history, manuscripts, folk ballads, folk literature, etc. of Himachal Pradesh. He has published above hundred research papers in other reputed research journals. The subject matter of these research papers is based on the history of the Himalaya and Himachal, culture, the reckoning of time, folk history, folk literature, deity worship principles, astronomy, Pahari language, dialects, scripts, education, inscriptions, and manuscripts. He has presented one hundred and twenty research papers in national and international seminars and symposiums. Besides, he has acted as a coordinator in five national seminars.
  • He has acted as a research supervisor of thirteen M.Phil research scholars in the International Centre for Distance Education and Open Learning, Himachal Pradesh University, Summer Hill, Shimla.
  • He has contributed to form the curriculum of Himachal Pradesh Administrative Services (HAS). Besides, he has worked as the subject expert in the interview panel of Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC), Shimla and in Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Service Selection Board (HPSSSB), Hamirpur.
  • Moreover, he has been a member of many committees such as Himachal Kala Sanskriti Bhasha Akademi Executive Council, committee set up for the implementation of Sanskrit language (the second state language of Himachal Pradesh) in the state and member of Cultural Policy of Himachal Pradesh etc.
  • He is Former Chairman of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Chair (Peeth) at Himachal Pradesh University, Summer Hill, Shimla. Besides, he is associated with the different research projects of Himachal Pradesh University (Summer Hill, Shimla), Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Bhasha Akademi, and Bhasha Vibhag of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Especially, Professor Om Prakash Sharma has contributed to preserve the disappearing scripts, manuscripts, “shrout” (oral) knowledge, Pahari language and dialects through his research and writing. He has presented the principles of deity worship, based on “shrout” tradition, in the written form. Moreover, he has written the alphabets of Tankari, Pabuchi, Bhatakhari, Pandvani, and Chandravani scripts in the same way in which these scripts have been written in the manuscripts. These alphabets will act as keys to the study of scripts and manuscripts.
  • In 1975, in a youth seminar in Mandi, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar suggested that University of Himachal Pradesh should make a curriculum based on Pahari language and folk literature. In accordance with this, Dr. Om Prakash Sharma prepared the curriculum for Parmar Studies based on Pahari language, dialects, scripts, and folk literature. As a Chairman of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Peeth, he got this curriculum implemented.
  • Moreover, he has written a documentary film Himachal Swadhinata Andolan Gauravgatha, which is based on the main events of freedom fighters, and movements for freedom.
  • Author is working on the preservation of disappearing manuscripts of Sancha. 15 manuscripts have been preserved by the author till today. Specially ‘Ugtae Sancha’ manuscripts have the theory of Kalganana ¼dkyx.kuk½ by this experts prepare the “Pahari Panchang Ugut” in which astronomical calculations were important. Dr. Sharma wrote one research paper-“Pahari Panchang Ugut” and presented in a International Conference. In his finding he proved that ‘Ugtae manuscripts’ have appropriate theory of astronomical calculations. This research work is related to Indian knowledge system
